We were invited by Vitra to join Sustaindex Talks, a YouTube series that brings together different perspectives on sustainability. In this conversation, we spoke about our relationship with earth—not only as a material, but as a way of thinking, making, and relating.
For us, sustainability cannot be reduced to a single definition. It is closely tied to how we live, how we produce, and how we engage with material, time, and energy. Working with earth introduces its own rhythm into the process—slowing things down, requiring patience, and reshaping the way we collaborate with others.
Earth became central to our practice through its ability to transform, its direct relationship with the human body, and its capacity to return to natural cycles. The works we produce are not simply objects that can return to the earth—they are, in many ways, earth itself.
Another key idea we discussed is our approach to production. We aim to create works that are neither indebted to nor extractive from nature. This means staying attentive to the full life cycle of what we make—from where the material comes from to how it returns.
Locality also plays a crucial role in our work. Earth inherently pushes us toward local production. Each site becomes a new encounter—a new soil, a new mixture, a new learning process. Rather than applying fixed solutions, we begin each project by listening to the land and its conditions.
The conversation also touched on experimentation and collaboration. Earth is not an easy material; it resists quick solutions. But this resistance keeps the process alive. Each project becomes a dialogue, and each collaboration opens new directions.
Toward the end of the talk, we reflected on hope. For us, it comes from the material itself, and from the people, places, and stories that emerge through working with it. Each return to the studio, each contact with soil, renews this relationship.
