Mono Earth at Akbank Sanat — Sustainable Design Talks: Leaving No Trace

On March 13, 2025, Mono Earth took part in Akbank Sanat’s Sustainable Design Talks – “Leaving No Trace” series with the talk “Touching Spaces with Earth” (Toprak ile Mekânlara Dokunmak), moderated by architect and academic Nur Gayretli. Akbank Sanat

The conversation focused on Mono Earth’s ongoing exploration of earth as a material for art, design, and architecture. Through projects developed at different scales—from objects and installations to spatial and architectural applications—the talk traced the studio’s approach to raw earth and, in particular, rammed-earth construction.

At the center of the discussion was the relationship between material, place, and sustainability. Rammed earth offers an alternative way of thinking about how we build: a material process that can generate virtually no production waste and allows earth to return to nature at the end of its use. The conversation therefore approached earth not only as a construction material, but as a medium through which design can establish a more direct relationship with its environment.

For Mono Earth, working with earth is also a process of rediscovery. By experimenting with different earthen construction techniques, scales, and contexts, the practice seeks to reveal the aesthetic and spatial potential of a material that has accompanied human settlements for thousands of years, while reconsidering its relevance within contemporary design culture.

The event formed part of Akbank Sanat’s broader Leaving No Trace programme, a series bringing together different disciplines to explore sustainability through architecture, design, repair, upcycling, material production, and food systems. Habertürk
